Resin bound vs resin bonded gravel

Understand how resin bound and resin bonded gravel differ in finish and drainage, and what to ask before choosing a driveway surface.

Resin bound gravel has the stones mixed into the resin before laying. Resin bonded gravel has stones scattered onto a layer of resin. That difference changes the finish and how water moves through the surface, so ask which system a driveway quote specifies.

How resin bound gravel is made

The aggregate and resin are mixed first, then spread with a trowel. Spaces between the coated stones let water pass through the surface. The result is a relatively smooth finish.

How resin bonded gravel is made

Resin is spread onto the prepared base, then loose aggregate is scattered over it so stones stick to the top. This produces a rougher, gravel-like texture. The resin layer is impermeable; water does not drain through it as it does through an open resin bound surface.

Does resin bound mean the whole driveway drains?

The surface is only one part of the design. A permeable resin bound finish needs a suitable permeable base beneath it to form a system that supports sustainable drainage, often called SuDS. Ask what is proposed below the finish and where the water will go. A resin label alone does not establish that your driveway design is suitable.

Compare the proposed systems, not just the colour

PIMI’s driveway service page lists both resin bound and resin bonded options. When you enquire, explain what matters most to you: the feel of the finish, the look beside your home, or an existing drainage problem. Ask PIMI to confirm the appropriate system for the site.

  • Is the quote for resin bound or resin bonded surfacing?
  • Which product and aggregate blend are proposed?
  • What preparation is needed, and can the existing base be used?
  • What drainage arrangement is included?
  • Is the proposed specification suitable for the vehicles that will use it?
  • What cleaning, aftercare and repair advice applies to this particular product?

Ask to see a sample of the specified finish and have the system, preparation and drainage recorded in the quote. Discuss any product warranty directly rather than assuming that all resin surfaces come with the same cover.

Discuss your resin driveway with PIMI

Share your postcode, approximate driveway size and whether the existing surface needs removing. Mention any standing water and how you use the driveway. PIMI can discuss access, ground preparation, drainage and the finish you have in mind.
